This is a hike through the marvellous maze of paths that criss-cross the closest island to Dubrovnik.

Lokrum Island, a special nature reserve under the protection of UNESCO, is Dubrovnik’s favourite swimming and relaxation spot. Located just in front of the Old Town, it takes 10 minutes by boat to be carried away to this oasis of peace and quiet, lush vegetation and crystal clear blue seas.

This is also a hike through legends, secrets, and odd stories connected with the island. Lace up your hiking shoes, but please unleash the child in you – this hike is magic, adventurous, and full of fun.

Are You Green-Fingered?

We are going to walk the length and breadth of the island. Or rather, the islet. Lokrum’s area measures only 0.7 km². The scenic paths criss-cross this green paradise full of holm oaks, laurels, pines, heathers, junipers… Exotic plants also grow there – in a Botanical Garden. And we’ll pass through Maximilian’s Gardens, laid out by the Archduke and Prince Maximilian of Austria. He had a particular interest in horticulture, but you don’t have to be green-fingered to enjoy this hike.

First we’ll explore the eastern part of the island: the Bay of Portoč, Charlotte’s Well, the place called Rocks, and the Dead Sea, a small salt water lake which is connected to the open sea. The major sight of the island is what remains of the 11th–century Benedictine Monastery, dissolved under Napoleon.

The hiking tour of Lokrum Island is easy and very picturesque. The only steep and rocky path is the one leading to the highest point of the island. Napoleon’s troops built the Fort Royal there. The view from the top of the military redoubt… well, that view will knock you out.

With this hike, you’ll recharge your batteries. Lokrum is not overcrowded, and there are no cars. It is in fact an uninhabited island. You can’t even spend the night there. The only inhabitants are peacocks. They roam freely through the greenery reminding visitors of the Habsburg Maximilian, the younger brother of the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph, who used the whole island as a private summer residence, and who brought the first peacocks from the Canary Islands.

Game Of Thrones

After our hike, you don’t have to return to Dubrovnik immediately. You can stay longer, jump into the sea, sunbathe or simply listen to the silence. We’ll give you a return boat ticket and you can spend as much time as you want on the island. You can also visit a small museum devoted to the filming of Game of Thrones in Croatia. There’s even a replica of the Iron Throne to sit on. What more could you ask for?

Go prepared to stay longer. Pack whatever you want in your backpack: clothes, towel, book, picnic, bottle of wine… And after our hike, you’ll have everything you need to spend more time on the island in comfort.
